Happy Birthday Stilnovo

Looking back through the history of the Stilnovo shop in Chiavenna it really does appear to have been inspired almost by serendipity.

Opened in 1968 – yes, its 50th birthday looms large – it owes its name to the inspiration of Beniamino Brambilla. Travelling salesman, just 25, from Bevera in Brianza, he established himself in Chiavenna in 1947 when he realised that the town lacked an outlet for his particular product. Legend has it on arrival one day he sold every pair of shoes he had in his van. Bingo!! Hence a shop in upper via Dolzino opened and still remains today. 1968 saw the opening of a second enterprise in the piazza Pestalozzi. Stilnovo took its first bow. Other than shoes, articles on sale included accessories, a range of bags, suitcases and clothing. All that was left was to establish who would run the store. Second son Danilo had just left school
and was looking to make his own way in the world.
He was 15 and despite his youth his father decided to entrust him with the responsibility for the entire concern. It was to prove far-sighted. At the time the main operatives in the clothing sector were Città d’Italia. Nava¸ and Rigamonti. Stilnovo needed to create its own identity. Danilo decided to introduce some lesser- known brands to the town. So it was that in 1975 he was selling Louis Vuitton bags, the then-unknown Timberland and Pierre Cardin knitwear.
More than anything perhaps it was Danilo’s personal taste coming to the fore. Ever since his youth he had always been mad about “British-country” style, fine-tuned on his regular trips to Scotland, Ireland and England. And today, together with his sister Roberta and wife Marisa, the shop continues to be an important reference point for locals but also for many visiting tourists. So 50 years on and still blooming. A success based on intuition and taste alongside an informal and affable style which makes each customer feel that little bit special. Congratulations are in order!!
