What’s the very best way for a skier to indulge himself after an exhilarating yet energy-sapping day on the piste? How can he revitalise his exhausted physical state having spent many an hour creating a veritable tapestry of swirls and swoops on the snow at 2000m and above? The answer was pretty unanimous: an entertaining and lengthy evening at a table in one of Valchiavenna’s noted crotti. These typical and pretty unique purveyors of hearty traditional fare represent the perfect venue in which to chill out whilst savouring the delights of local cuisine. We recommend kicking off with a delicious antipasto, with mushrooms, handcrafted bresaola, and other home-produced cold cured meats. The starter simply has to involve the valley’s legendary white pizzocchero, created lovingly with white flour, butter and stretched curd cheese. To follow, the classic mixed platter: sausage, spare ribs and vegetables all cooked on traditional hot stones accompanied by nothing less than polenta taragna: it’s a menu both simple and reassuringly age-old. And all bolstered of course with a bottle or two of quality Valtellina red wine.
Choose a crotto: the perfect end to a thrill-packed, deliciously-invigorating Valchiavenna experience.
