How to get to Madesimo and how to move around the area

Reaching Madesimo by every means of transportation
Madesimo is located in the province of Sondrio and can be reached by car from both Italy and abroad, through Switzerland, as well as by other means, whether public or private. Compared to other major tourist destinations in Valtellina, Madesimo has the advantage of being closer to Milan and the highways of northern Italy, making it reachable in a shorter time without having to cross the entire Valtellina. Additionally, Madesimo is a perfect destination for a mountain vacation without a car, thanks to the shuttle service from Chiavenna and connections with the hamlets, not to mention the transport services provided by various hotels and accommodations.
Getting to Madesimo from Lombardy
To reach Madesimo by car from Italy, there are two routes: from Milan, taking the Strada Statale 36 dello Spluga towards Lecco-Chiavenna, or – for those coming from the northeast – from Valtellina (accessible via the Aprica Pass, or the Gavia and Stelvio Passes in summer), taking the Strada Statale 38 towards Sondrio-Morbegno and then the SS 36 to Madesimo.
Getting to Madesimo from abroad
For tourists coming from abroad – Switzerland and Northern Europe – the routes to reach Madesimo by car vary depending on the season. Approximately from the beginning of May until the end of November, it is possible to reach Madesimo via the Spluga Pass, while in the winter months, Madesimo can be reached via the Julier and Maloja Passes.

Useful information
During the winter season, the use of snow tires or carrying chains is mandatory.
In Madesimo, there are electric car charging stations on Via degli Argini near the Sports Center and on Via A. De Giacomi near the bus stop.

Getting to Madesimo by Train and Bus
It is also possible to reach Madesimo by public transportation. The nearest train station is Chiavenna, which is only 20 kilometers away and can be reached by train from Milan (Milano-Tirano route and then Colico-Chiavenna). From Chiavenna, you can reach Madesimo by bus, with scheduled buses connecting with the arrival and departure of trains.

From Campodolcino to Madesimo with Sky Express Funicular
Sky Express is the funicular to Madesimo that connects Campodolcino, at an altitude of 1082 meters, with the Alpe Motta resort (Madesimo) at 1721 meters above sea level.

Bus turistici per Madesimo
Tourist bus to Madesimo
It is also possible to reach Madesimo by tourist buses, the circulation of which is subject to certain limitations in terms of size:
- From Chiavenna, transit is prohibited for vehicles over 13 metres long and 4.25 metres high;
- From Campodolcino to Madesimo, driving on the SP1 towards Isola is obligatory;
- Passo Spluga on the Swiss side: maximum width 2.55 metres + maximum length 10 metres - circulation only with permit.
